Topic: Saying goodbye at the school entrance – Why this rule helps your children
Dear parents,
Taking your child to school every morning is an important moment for many of you. I understand that the policy of seeing your child off at the school entrance may be unfamiliar at first. A concerned father recently asked me for an explanation – so I would like to explain transparently to all parents why this measure has been taken in the interests of your children.
Your concerns have reached me
Over the past few months, many parents – both at the general parents’ meeting and in personal conversations with me – have expressed a desire for increased access control. They were concerned about the safety of their children and wanted clearer rules about who is in the building when school is in session. I have taken these legitimate concerns seriously and have made the following arrangements.
Why this regulation?
1. safe, quiet space for your children
Over 460 pupils come every morning – with just as many adults. When they all enter the building at the same time, it creates crowds and unrest. In the past, conflicts between children have escalated due to adults being present. Saying goodbye at the entrance creates a protected space for your children in which they can move freely and safely.
2. strengthen independence
The way from the entrance to the classroom is a little adventure for your child. They learn: “I can do it on my own!” This experience boosts
3. structured start to school
Your children need clarity in the morning. A calm start to school provides
4. access control – your request will be implemented
Many of you have explicitly asked for better control over who is in the building. The regulation makes this possible – for the protection of your children and in accordance with the wishes of many parents from our school community.
I take your concerns seriously
- “Will my child be well received?” – Yes! Teachers and educators are there from the entrance.
- “What if my child needs me?” – Then we will find individual solutions!
- “Am I less involved?” – No! The educational partnership remains intact through parent-teacher conferences, parents’ evenings, daily communication and joint projects.
Exceptions are possible
- School starters in the familiarization phase
- Children with special needs by arrangement
- Unsafe children – talk to us!
- Meetings with parents at any time by appointment
- Visit to the secretariat
If your child needs an exception, please contact me or the class teacher.
Legal basis
As principal, I am responsible for the safety of all pupils (§ 69 of the Berlin School Act – domiciliary rights). Within the scope of this domiciliary right, I decide who is in the school building during school hours. This regulation is not an exception, but standard at most Berlin elementary school.
How to support your child
- Say goodbye lovingly at the entrance – with confidence
- Show confidence: “You can do it!”
- Contact us if you have any questions or concerns
Your positive attitude will help your child to start the school day with confidence.
If you have any questions, please feel free to arrange a personal appointment. I take your concerns seriously.
Together we create an environment in which your children can learn and grow safely and independently.
Thank you for your trust!
With best regards
