How you can prepare your child for school

Independence
  • Your child should be able to recognize their own name.
  • Practice using scissors, pencil and glue.
  • Pack the school folder together with your child.
  • Encourage your child’s independence: Putting on and taking off a jacket, tying a bow, communicating their own needs, keeping order, …
  • Choose a safe route to school with your child. Bright and reflective clothing will make your child more visible in traffic.
  • Practise using a knife and fork when eating with your child.
Motivation
  • Look forward to school with your child and celebrate the first day of school.
  • Encourage your child’s curiosity and talk to them about their time at school.
  • Explain to your child why you are learning reading, writing and arithmetic and how useful this is.

Tips for the start of school

BVG student ticket

You should apply for a free school ticket for your child from the BVG at the start of school, as this is required for school trips. A confirmation of your child’s enrollment at our school will be issued in advance by the secretary’s office.

Lunch box and water bottle

Please give your child enough healthy food and drink(only water) and avoid sweets in the lunch box.

School route safety

Please note that parking, even for a short time, in front of the school is prohibited. If you need to bring your child to school by car, please only use public parking spaces.

Information on everyday school life

Bringing and collecting the children

At Mierendorff Primary School, the school day begins for all children at 7:30 a.m. (lessons start at 8:00 a.m.). As part of the school trial “so-called “FlexGanztag””, you can decide together with your child whether the school day ends at 2:30 pm or 4:00 pm. You must make a binding decision at the beginning of the school year for each weekday for half a school year.

Example: every Monday 14:30, every Tuesday 16:00, …

During FlexTime between 2:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., children can take part in special FlexModules (AGs) and complete school tasks.

Contact with class teachers and educators

If you have any questions about individual subjects at the school or if you would like a personal meeting, the teachers and educators are available by appointment. They are best contacted by e-mail and the e-mail addresses are: vorname.nachname@mierie.de

If you do not have the e-mail addresses, you can contact the parent representatives in your class.

Sick notes

You can report sick online via the school website. To do this, you will need a class code from your child’s teacher. Alternatively, please contact your child’s class teacher, reference teacher and the childcare room (betreuungszimmer@mierie.de) by email before 8:00 am. On the third day at the latest, a written explanation and the expected duration of the absence must be handed in to the class teacher or sent by e-mail. Once your child has recovered, please provide him/her with a written certificate covering the entire period of absence.

Parent representation

Two parent representatives are elected in each class, who are available as contact persons for parents with questions and problems in the respective class and can mediate and coordinate contact between parents and teachers and educators. Should difficulties arise or further information is required, you can also contact the parent representatives. You can reach them by email at gev@mierie.de.

Physical education

Jewelry is not permitted in sports lessons. This also applies to stud earrings. If your child wears earrings, please make sure that your child leaves the jewelry at home on the days with sports lessons. If this is not possible, please practice putting on and taking off the jewelry with your child. Ear studs can be covered with plasters if they cannot be removed.

Cell phone use / smartwatches

The use of cell phones is prohibited in the entire school building. We therefore recommend that you leave your cell phone at home. The school accepts no liability for the loss or theft of cell phones, valuables or money.

Further information

Further important Information
  • Please inform the class teacher and the reference teacher in good time of any known allergies, illnesses and other special circumstances so that your child’s particularities can be taken into account.
  • Textbooks are provided for your child by the school and do not need to be purchased separately. You will be informed by the teachers and educators about other materials required (pencils, ink box, exercise books, etc.).
  • Please label all materials and items of clothing with your child’s name.
  • Your child has the opportunity to do their homework and other school-related tasks in our cozy study room (learning office). We want our pupils to feel comfortable and to be able to use their learning time effectively. The study room is such a place where your child can concentrate and work in peace.
  • After school, additional voluntary educational activities are offered for the children as part of the after-school care program. These include clubs, sports activities, supervised learning support, language support and much more. You can obtain information on this from your child’s teacher.
  • You can also obtain support services for you and your family from our school social workers, and you can obtain further information and contact details from your reference teachers.
